What kind of hard drives is suitable for installation into TNAS?
TNAS can install 2.5 inch SATA hard drive, 3.5inch desktop SATA hard drive or 2.5 inch SSD. Since TNAS is kind of storage device that needs to work long hours, even work for 24 hours a day and seven days per week, so not all kinds of hard drives are suitable for TNAS because of high demand on hard drive, it is recommended to use dedicated NAS hard drive. Please visit the official website of TerraMaster to read the contents of Hard drive Compatibility to select a proper hard drive for TNAS.

Can D2-310/D4-310/D4-300/D5-300 be used with Windows and Mac computers?
Yes, only when the hard drive is in ExFAT format. A hard drive in ExFAT format easily fails to read and write during abnormal operations. For example, you pull out the USB cable, remove the hard drive, and shut down the power suddenly before the product is ejected properly from the computer, and thus the hard drive may make an error where it can read but not write. Therefore, we do not recommend using ExFAT format. In order to avoid damage to the hard drive or loss of data when using ExFAT format, please be prudent in your operation to make sure RAID storage devices eject normally from the computer before you remove the USB cable and hard drive and shut down the power. If the above scenario happens, please try to reboot the device.
The hard drive can read but not write in Mac computers when it is formatted into NTFS.

Why can’t the HDD’s in tray 1 and 2 in the D5-300C be created RAID by other 3rd party software, but HDD’s in tray 3, 4 and 5 can?
The D5-300C has the RAID controller to control the RAID for HDD’s in tray 1 and 2. If these two HDD’s were created RAID by 3rd party software, the RAID controller would be incompatible with the one D5-300C already has. And as there is no RAID controller for the HDD’s in tray 3, 4 and 5, these three HDD’s are supported to use 3rd party software to create RAID.
-
Are hard drives employed in other storage devices compatible with D2-310/D4-310/D5-300C/D5-300? In general, yes, but TerraMaster DAS may not be compatible with hard drives run on other devices because not all storage devices have the same RAID configuration. In such an event, the computer should be commanded to execute initialisation and formatting of the hard drives once these have been installed on the TerraMaster DAS device.
-
Why are hard drives installed on TerraMaster DAS not recognised by computers with Windows XP operating system?
This is likely caused by the fact that the hard drive installed on TerraMaster DAS has a capacity exceeding 2TB, which is unrecognised by Windows XP OS. If this is the case, another OS should be used. A 64-bit system is recommended for hard disks with large capacity, as hard drives with a capacity exceeding 6TB are not recognised by some 32-bit systems.
